UN Environment – ENVSEC portfolio of projects for the promotion of

transboundary environmental cooperation and sustainability in Belarus

– Support to the Swedish Strategy for Cooperation with Belarus –

This website presents the key results of three years of an environmental cooperation programme implemented in Belarus between July 2014 and December 2016 by Zoï Environment Network in collaboration with Belarusian partners.

The Government of Sweden provided funding through the Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC), and UN Environment (UNEP) managed Zoï activities through a project implementation agreement with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

The project portfolio focused on five thematic components:

•   Assessing and monitoring flood risk in the Pripyat river basin (with a focus on the Yaselda river)
•   Assessing and improving the environmental safety of oil pipelines crossing Belarusian territory
•   Enhancing the coverage of environment-security issues and linkages by the Belarusian mass media
•   Understanding climate change as a security risk for the country as a whole, and for various population groups
    and economic sectors
•   Promoting the pollutant release and transfer register (PRTR) including a pilot project in the Hrodna oblast of 
    Belarus

Under the same cooperation programme, Zoï also supported the environmental impact assessment of chalk mining at the southern border of Belarus.
